Spatial Interruptions-
Artes Mundi & Valleys Kids

Encounter. Pass. Look back. Consider.

As part of Artes Mundi's Encounter programme Claire Prosser lead a project 'Spatial Interruptions' with the Rhondda Cynon Taff based community group- Art Works Valleys Kids. /valleyskids.org/the-projects/artworks/
The aim was to respond to themes conjured through Artes Mundi 6 artist Renata Lucas. Lucas' interactive installation in the National Museum Wales posed difficult situations for both staff and visitors as her work played with the rules of the museum space and how we move through it. She likened her array of heavy, wooden, moveable panels to words and sentences which we can shift around to create new meanings and languages.
This encounter responded to this. In a pre-event workshop we designed panels, labelling each with a different letter plucked from A-R-T-E-S-M-U-N-D-I. These letters could be reconfigured when moved around physically and seen from different angles. We practiced the different formations and arrangements then imposed them upon Cardiff city centre Christmas shoppers. Through our choreography, we challenged pedestrian movement, there cognition and understanding of language and drew focus upon things in the city centre that would not have originally been seen. The noun verb 'Rest' seemed a significantly powerful word among a crowd of bustling shoppers!
