My dog, like many other dogs on their walk will definitely do three things. Poo, once, maybe twice. Wee, whether they need one or not. And sniff, everything.
Every other few steps when my dog would stop to sniff I would call, jess, jess come on, JESS! And pull at her lead to stop her from sniffing the other dogs piss or the rotting left over take away meal, the newly emerging daffodils or even the patch of soil that smelt particularly interesting.
On this one day I started giving myself a little silent row. Why am I imparting my stresses of daily life to keep going, to get home, to rush- onto her? So I stopped and stood while she stopped and sniffed… and it was lovely. I looked around and not at my feet. I watched the tides of long grass wave and overlap itself. I sniffed the air and heard the birds taking flight.
Since that walk, I committed myself to the famous words, “I’m never ill” to which the bacteria fairies decided to get right about work on my body and soon catapulted me into a deep trough of flu symptoms. The fairies were telling me to stop which maybe we should all do from time to time, to recuperate, to reflect or to recover. You can’t do 5k pace for a full marathon- I'll set my alarm to read this again in three weeks time.
Today, was the first day I’ve managed to get up and walk without feeling dizzy or wanting to fall back into the chair. Though, I did have to stop when I took Jess out for her walk today. I, had to stop and sniff. Jess didn’t mind. I stopped and let her sniff, while she, let me.
